1. International Food Evening
The Annual International Food Evening will be held on Saturday 24 April 2010. This is the biggest and most exciting "adult-only" evening of the year. The Parents' Association is looking for volunteers to help organize this wonderful event. We need coordinators for the Country Food Tables, Kitchen, Set-up and Clean-up, Entertainment. On Friday 12 February 2010 at 09.15 hrs we will have a presentation and short meeting in the lobby of OIS to explain our needs. Hope we can count on your expertise or free time! oispa2009@hotmail.com
2. OIS’s Response to the Haitian Earthquake
The recent earthquake in Haiti has prompted our school to organize activities to raise student awareness of disaster response measures and to provide them with an opportunity to contribute to these efforts. On Thursday afternoon Dr. Hossam Elsharkawi, an OIS parent and the Emergency Response Coordinator for the Norwegian Red Cross, gave presentations to our upper primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary students. His job is to coordinate the establishment of the emergency response unit (ERU) field hospitals provided by the Norwegian Red Cross. He and his team were in Haiti two days after the earthquake. Dr. Elsharkawi shared a short video on the ERU program, talked about his experience in Haiti, and answered students’ questions. The Primary and Lower Secondary Student Councils have organized fund raising activities for next week with the proceeds to go to the Norwegian Red Cross: Primary – Bake Sale on Friday and Lower Secondary – “Hearts for Haiti” (chocolate hearts & candy) sold during lunch all week. Donations will also be accepted. More details about these events will be e-mailed to parents early next week.
3. New Security Procedures for the Primary School Wing
To better control access to the school, entry through the outside doors of the primary wing which face the access road will be restricted to staff with key cards. The doors to the Primary School lobby are open from 8.45 to 9.00 and 15.00 to 15.15 each day. Parents are requested to use the main entrance to the school outside of these times. They are not required to sign-in at the Reception Office as is the expectation for all visitors.
4. Festive Baking “Fastelavnboller” Activity
Primary Norwegian Teacher, Mari Lunde, will be leading this baking activity for student in Y3 and up from 15.15 to 17.00 on Thursday, 11 February. The cost is 120 NOK for supplies and a snack. Student will take home fastelavnboller and decorate branches in the traditional Norwegian manner. To register, please e-mail Ms. Lunde at mari.lunde@oslois.no.
