Support for Learning
Program Overview
At Oslo International School we approach support for learning in a whole school context. Class teachers are responsible for meeting the learning needs of students in the classroom and the Support for Learning Department is referred to when students require additional support. The Department is currently staffed by three teachers, a speech and language pathologist, a teaching assistant, a part-time counsellor, and a part-time educational consultant. Elements of the program include the following:
Assessment
• Assess children who have been referred to help ascertain educational needs
• Consult and communicate with interested parties and provide recommendations for referrals
Service Delivery
• Individual or small group instruction
• In-class support or team teaching where appropriate
• Short term support
• Long term support for students with learning disabilities as required
• Reinforcement of expected learning outcomes through the Support for Learning ‘After School Club’
• Consult with class teachers about students’ needs and progress
• Provide staff development
Learning Outcomes
• Students with learning disabilities receive an Individual Education Plan (IEP) addressing specific learning goals based on areas of difficulty
• The IEP is a partnership between the student, class teacher, parent and support for learning staff
• Frequent communication with parents concerning learning outcomes and present levels of performance
• Contact with students provided through 1-4 sessions per week, tailored to the student’s needs
