Easing the transition: our commitment to supporting students and families

Forging a sense of community is a primary goal of OIS, and our focus is on integration and engagement. Many of our families are new to the school and to Norway, and we appreciate the importance of settling in quickly. Our aim is to help all of our newcomers enjoy and make the most of their time here.

Supporting the Transition

We want our families to find those meaningful and lasting connections within school and across our community. Schoolwide events are arranged to encourage meet-ups, and thematic coffee mornings are held monthly to help parents adapt and find that sense of belonging.

The support we had from the OIS community when we arrived meant so much. Having the opportunity to meet other families made our transition so much easier.

Getting Involved

The OIS community offers a variety of activities and courses for the whole family. Why not learn Norwegian while in Norway? Or maybe it is time to let your sporty side shine and join an adult sports activity?

We have a wide range of after school activities, some of which are dedicated to adult learning (such as language classes and community sports evenings). In addition, our Parent Association often arranges events and excursions to help new families get involved. While our students regularly participate in competitions with clubs and schools at home and abroad, OIS families are always invited to cheer on our athletes, and sometimes even accompany them on tournaments.

Volunteering and Networking

At OIS, parents and families are highly valued and well-integrated into our school community. Each school year, many parents volunteer their time, energy and expertise to support student learning. The volunteer opportunities at OIS are numerous. Parents help in classrooms, in the library and join our field trips. They speak to students about careers and coach our students during weekend sports tournaments. You will find parents organising festivals and celebrations, as well as leading OIS as members of our School Board. In addition to making a meaningful impact on the lives of OIS students, our volunteers form important relationships with other parents that often last well beyond their years at OIS.

Oslo International School has a very supportive Parent Association. OISPA organises events and fundraisers that enrich our students’ educational experiences and foster community spirit.
