Forging a sense of community is a primary goal of OIS, and part of our focus is on family benefits. Many of our families are new to the school and to Norway, and we appreciate the importance of settling in quickly. Our aim is to help all of our newcomers fast-track to an enjoyable and enriching life during their time here in Oslo. Our Community Activities Manager is a full-time resource dedicated to providing this support.

Relocation and transition support

Everything is a new lesson when you move to a new country. OIS understands this and offers help with relocation and transition for new families.   We can assist in many ways, including:

  • dialogue with local authorities on issues such as social security registration, local banking procedures,  driving license requirements, car registration.

  • providing practical information such as advice on automobile purchase, utilities, phone and cable hook up, identification of child-care and domestic services, lawyers and medical providers.

  • introduction to expatriate support groups, clubs and associations.

Volunteering & networking at OIS

At OIS, parents and families are highly valued and well-integrated into our school community. Each school year, many parents volunteer their time, energy and expertise to support student learning. The volunteer opportunities at OIS are numerous. Parents help in classrooms, in the library and join our field trips. They speak to students about careers and coach our students during weekend sports tournaments. You will find parents organising festivals and celebrations, as well as leading OIS as members of our School Board. In addition to making a meaningful impact on the lives of OIS students, our volunteers form important relationships with other parents that often last well beyond their years at OIS. Do not hesitate to contact our Community Activities Manager if you need more information on a particular subject, or have questions about volunteering (new volunteering suggestions are also welcome!).

Parent & family activities

The OIS Community offers a variety of activities and language courses for the whole family. Why not learn Norwegian while in Norway? Or maybe it is time to let your inner artist shine and try Bollywood Dance or Chinese Water painting? Take a look at our offer and join in! If you have questions or need more information, please contact our Community Activities Manager.

Student transportation service

Although students at OIS are not eligible for public funding for school transportation, the school organises an optional bus service covering large parts of Oslo, Bærum, and Asker with links to additional transportation via bus or train. Learn more about our School bus service and routes by contacting our Bus Coordinator.

Parent association (OISPA)

OIS has an active and vibrant Parent Association, whose aim is to promote good communication between parents and staff, and provide volunteer services to support the activities of the school community. OISPA arranges monthly Community Coffees and Parent Association meetings, which are important meeting places for many of our parents. It is also a place where parents and the OIS leadership meet to make inter-school dialogue easy. If you are a parent or legal guardian of a student at OIS you are automatically a member of OISPA.
