Science & Innovation

Inspiring curious minds

Science and innovation inspire students to question, investigate and understand the world around them. From the earliest years, curiosity is nurtured through inquiry, hands-on exploration and real-world learning.

Through dedicated science laboratories and specialist learning spaces, including our Innovation Space, students experiment, design, create and test their ideas while developing critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills.

Technology with Purpose

Technology is thoughtfully integrated across the curriculum to enrich learning, foster creativity and develop the digital skills students need for the future. At OIS, we believe technology should enhance education—not replace it—encouraging students to use digital tools with purpose, responsibility and critical awareness.

Students develop coding, programming and digital literacy while learning to evaluate information, solve problems and use technology safely and responsibly.

In the Primary School, iPads remain at school and are used for selected projects and classroom activities, supporting our balanced approach to technology. Toddle enables students to reflect on their learning and strengthens communication between school and home.

As students progress into Secondary, they use their own laptops to support learning across the curriculum. ManageBac provides a central platform for course materials, assignments, feedback and communication, helping students develop independence and organisational skills.

Scientific Discovery

Science is a core part of learning throughout the school.

In Primary, science is taught through the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), where it is integrated with subjects such as geography, history, technology, the arts and literacy. This cross-curricular approach helps students understand how science connects with the world around them while developing observation, investigation and enquiry skills.

In Secondary, students build on these foundations through the study of biology, chemistry and physics. Practical investigations and experiments play a central role, helping students ask questions, test ideas, evaluate evidence and understand how scientific knowledge develops.

Applied Learning

Students have many opportunities to extend their learning beyond the classroom.

Years 7 and 8 take part in an annual Science Fair, carrying out and presenting their own investigations. In Upper Secondary, students complete an interdisciplinary science project, exploring a question through the perspectives of biology, chemistry and physics.

Guest speakers and visits to local organisations further enrich learning by introducing students to current scientific research, innovation and careers in STEM.

Design & Innovation

Innovation is embedded across the curriculum from Pre-School to Upper Secondary, encouraging students to think creatively, solve problems and bring ideas to life.

Students have opportunities throughout the school to explore design, technology and creative problem-solving. Our Innovation Space supports this work by providing specialist tools and technologies for hands-on projects across a range of subject areas.
